Default Overwhelming Task

Overwhelming Task

Isaiah 6:1-13: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send?’ …And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (v.8).

“I can’t do it!” said the middle-age husband and father. “I’ve hurt too many people. There’s so much to change. I can’t bear the pain.” And with that he packed his bags and left town.

Some of us, like this man, are overwhelmed by the problems our past lifestyles have caused. Change seems impossible. The huge task of reordering our attitudes and behavior is formidable.

When God called Isaiah to be a prophet, he gave him an enormous job to do. Although Isaiah was willing, he felt inadequate for the task ahead. It must have required a great deal of courage and faith for him to change his lifestyle and do what God wanted. Once we decide that God wants us to change, we too need courage and faith to move ahead. Even though we have no guarantee others will agree with our decisions, like Isaiah, our initial move is to say, “Lord, here I am.” Then we can trust him to help us take the next step. God will not leave us alone.

Lord, the task of changing my beliefs and behavior

looms before me like an insurmountable wall.

I can’t do it without you.

So here I am, please help.
Joan C. Webb
