Soaring High
Soaring High
By Lydia E. Harris “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31). Read: Isaiah 40:25-31 While watching eagles soar above the bluffs of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, I was reminded of a sermon which described three ways birds fly. Some, such as hummingbirds, fly through constant motion. Others build speed by flapping their wings, then glide gracefully before flapping again. Only a few birds, such as eagles, soar on rising air currents at speeds up to 80 miles (130 kilometers) per hour without flapping. Of course, soaring takes the least effort. The soaring eagles of Isaiah 40 depict the renewed strength available to those who hope in the Lord (v. 31). I love this picture of effortless soaring above the weariness and cares of the world. How can we reach such heights? Isaiah speaks of God’s great power and mighty strength promising that the Lord “will not grow tired or weary”. In contrast, we see our limitations: “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall”. But God doesn’t leave us in our weakness, hoarding all the divine strength. Instead, God promises to give strength to the weary and to increase the power of the weak. As we hope in Him, the Lord renews our strength, enabling us to soar on wings like eagles. Do you need renewed strength? Do you want to soar above life’s circumstances? I do. Let’s place our complete hope in the Lord, praying for renewed strength. Then, swept up on the current of His power, we’ll soar like eagles. Almighty God, You alone are the source of the power and strength I need. I don’t want to flap my way through life on my own. Renew my strength and help me soar today, in Your strength. Amen. Questions: Are you willing today to ask the Lord to bring His strength into your weakness? Will you allow Him to help you soar today by His Spirit?
