How Do We Know?
How Do We Know?
1 Corinthians 2 “No one can really know what anyone else is thinking, or what he is really like, except that person himself” (TLB). In the movie, Driving Miss Daisy, the wealthy Miss Daisy and her longtime chauffeur have both aged considerably. As they discuss their predicaments, Miss Daisy accuses the chauffeur of continuing to drive even though his eyesight is failing. “How do you know how I can see, ‘lessen you look out my eyes?” is his response. Those of us who try to make everything all right often assume we know what others think or need. “If you’d eat better, you would not get sick” or “You’ll be sorry if you take that job in Europe” or “I bet you think I made a bad decision” or “You must be getting a cold; you’re cranky.” What we do not realize is: our sick friend was bitten by a deer tick and diagnosed with lyme disease, the European job would be a beneficial career choice, the person is actually proud of our decision, and the bad mood was due to job loss. When we assume we know another’s thoughts or needs we get dangerously close to playing God. By giving this responsibility back to God, we release ourselves to relax and enjoy life. Lord, forgive me for thinking I’m powerful enough to know another’s thoughts or needs. I want to learn to treat others with respect. Please help me. Joan C. Webb
