Default Have you ever heard somebody tell you that time heals all wounds?

Have you ever heard somebody tell you that time heals all wounds? They usually tell you that when somebody hurt you and you are upset about it. At that moment you don’t seem to ever be able to get over that hurt.

To be honest, I disagree with that statement because I have tried that over and over again. When a particular person in my life hurt me time and time again I removed that person from my life for weeks and sometimes months at a time, thinking that I just needed some space and I would get over it. But the next time that person hurt me, all the old stuff came back up again.

I was not over it. Even though I had told myself that I had forgiven that person, I realized how wrong I had been.

But why? I had prayed to God to help me forgive. I even prayed for Him to help me forget. So why was I still so angry about the old things? Because I was missing an important step:

“Bless those who persecute you [who are cruel in their attitude toward you]; bless and do not curse them.” Romans 12:14.

Even though I had forgiven that person, I didn’t really want good things to happen in her life. I had never asked God to bless her.

Forgiveness and the blessing of our enemies go hand in hand. Hasn’t God blessed us when He forgot our sins after we confessed them to Him? He does not bring up the old things. He doesn’t care about our past. He only cares about our Today and our Tomorrow.

People often say that they can forgive but never forget. Of course not, if they don’t want to let go and bless those who have done them wrong.

So eventually I changed my way of thinking. I know that God is my vindicator and that He will give back to me what has been taken from me in this life. God will make things right, I don’t have to do that. And God knows the heart of that person much better than I do, He will judge her and deal with her according to His sense of justice, which is way better than mine anyways.

I began to pray not only for help to forgive, but also to bless those who have hurt me, and sure enough: I got over it. I can now talk about those things from the past without the anger and pain coming back up. I have truly forgiven that person and it feels so good to not carry that baggage around with me anymore.

Lord, I thank You, that You removed my sins from me and remember them no more. Help me to forgive those who hurt me, forget the wrong that has been done to me and, and bless those who have offended me. Amen.
